The Domaining plugin came about due to Vandelay’s growing sideline in buying and selling domain names for fun & profit.

Domain names (such as Vandelay.co.uk) are valued based on a number of factors such as length, brandability and search engine presence.

To attempt to determine the value of a domain name, domain name investors must use a number of third party websites to retrieve information which may be of value. Vandelay built a plugin to help domainers see some of these criteria in one place.

By using the powerful capabilities of the Firefox web browser to display this information within the websites of the domain name marketplaces; known as aftermarket websites.

As well as building the plugin Vandelay created a simple website to house and promote the Firefox extension, drumming up interest for the product and allowing the extension to be sold online.
